Yan Xiaonan
Yan needs to show from the outset that the Brazilian will have to contend with her speed. Constant kicks and attacks from different angles will make Gomes nervous and force her either to retreat or launch reckless attacks. Xiaonan will frequently target the body, land accurate hooks while moving off line and find ways around her opponent's defence, forcing her to cover up and focus more on defending. Yan needs aggression and a consistent attacking tempo. Otherwise, Denise will sense that she has room to manoeuvre and rush into the clinch.
Denise Gomes
Denise's main task is to take away Xiaonan's greatest advantage — her striking. The Brazilian needs to close the distance with overhands and immediately enter the clinch. Only through constant knee strikes at close range will Gomes be able to move ahead on points and drain her opponent's stamina. From there, a successful takedown may follow. But if the fight goes to the ground, Denise is unlikely to stop the Chinese fighter early. At best, she will create a couple of threats or keep her on the mat.
Yan Xiaonan vs Denise Gomes Prediction
Denise may be slightly stronger physically than the Chinese fighter, but she is clearly inferior in speed and striking ability. It will be difficult for the Brazilian to land overhands against her opponent, especially as Yan is almost 4 inches taller. Xiaonan will be able to break down her opponent with body kicks and precise straight punches to the head. She lost to Jandiroba because of wrestling problems, but Denise does not have Virna's takedowns or control. Even if Yan ends up on the ground, she will still be able to get back to her feet. Gomes is unlikely to find an answer for the more experienced opponent on the feet.
