How to choose the best dart betting site?

Darts betting is a totally different kettle of fish than Football, Horse Racing, or any of the other major betting sports. It has a unique format, and unique scoring system, and as such only the best darts betting sites are tailored to suit this. Below we list some of the areas that a good darts betting site should excel at.

Variety of darts betting markets

Each darts tournament run by the professional darts tournament (PDC) will follow a similar 'knock out' format allowing you to bet on each of the individual matches, who will qualify for each stage, and finally also the eventual tournament winner.

Major darts competitions

You will definitely need your darts betting site to cover the major events and some of the less prominent ones as well. We have listed the events to look out for below, as well as when they are usually held.

  • European Championship – October

  • Grand Slam of Darts – November

  • International Darts Open – February

  • PDC World Championship – December to January

  • Premier League Darts – February to May

  • The Masters – January

  • UK Open – March

  • US Darts Masters – June

  • World Cup of Darts – September

  • World Grand Prix – October

  • World Matchplay – July

  • World Series of Darts Finals – October

  • Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand Darts Masters – August

Live darts betting

Darts is a fantastic spectator sport and one of the beauties of it is the way a game can swing back and forth, at times literally dart to dart. Live betting is the main way bets are placed on a darts game and to know what is going on and which bets to place you need to be watching the match yourself. The best darts betting sites will offer not only to live stream the games themselves but also provide a live update of the match statistics so far with data you can analyse to help inform your decision.

Sky Bet In-Play darts interface

Mobile app

Use a darts betting site that has a dedicated mobile App to ensure that you can place your bets almost anytime from almost anywhere. You should look for:

✅ Easy to navigate between the live stream and betting markets

✅ Key statistics are updated live and always visible

✅ A chance to confirm bets if subject to an odds change

Licensed by a credible regulator

UK betting sites all have to be regulated by the UK Gambling Commission to accept deposits and take bets from UK customers. They help to ensure that the betting sites in question have been checked and verified and run their businesses in a fit and proper manner. It is still up to you to play responsibly because a regulator can only do so much.

How to watch darts by using live streaming?

The majority of the major tournaments are broadcast live and for free at the major betting sites using live streaming technology, direct to your computer or phone. To be listed by us as a top betting site this must be a feature which is offered.

  1. To find a live stream of the darts game you are interested in will vary ever so slightly from darts betting site to darts betting site but the basic principle will be the same and we shall give an example below:

  2. Log into your bookmaker account, and deposit money if the balance is zero.

  3. Navigate to the Darts matches currently taking place either by clicking on Darts OR you can click on "In Play".

  4. Open the match that you are interested in watching and click the "live stream" button to begin viewing pictures of the current game being played.

  5. If no live stream is available for licensing reasons the better betting sites (In this case Sky Bet) will usually give you a graphical representation of what is going on, along with a host of stats and data to guide you.

How to make money on darts betting?

There is only one way to make money from any type of bet in the short run, that is luck. There is only one way to make money from betting in the long run: betting on value (when the payout is greater than the chance of something happening). The majority of people do not gamble because they think that they can make money but instead gamble for fun, please remember to always play responsibly.

A few things which may not mean you win, but should at least mean it takes you longer to lose, are listed below:

Study the current form of the players and see how they have performed in recent tournaments which could help to give a foundation for your bets. Better still watch the games yourself because then you might get some insights behind the results, perhaps a player won but were they lucky to do so or were they consistently checking out each time they have the chance? Watching how players perform in different situations, for example, some players love a noisy crowd but some others hate it, can also help give you an insight into how players will perform in certain matchups.

Some people can read how a match is heading and can see when the writing is on the wall. If they have bet on a player pre match and then it turns out that was a mistake, it could be best to cut your losses and cash out with what you can get.

You can often place darts bets and make money without waiting for the outcome. Some people like to manage their positions as the game goes on. Many bookmakers offer Cash Out on darts betting which means you can place a bet on a darts market and take a profit before the match finishes.

The reverse can also be true if during a match your player is leading comfortably but you feel they have been getting more than their fair share of luck and the tide could soon turn, then you can close out the bet locking in a large profit still but without the risk of the opponent coming back into the game.

Darts betting offers

There are not many specific darts bonuses and promotions but some do come around now and then. It is more common to find general betting Free bets which can be used in conjunction with a darts bet. Some of the things to look out for are:

Money back offers and "If" bets: The most common type of offer specific to darts that you can find is money back offers on certain bets, if a different set of events come to pass. An example might be money back on your darts match winner bet IF your player scored the most 180s in the match.

Free bets: As the name suggests a Free bet is a bet which does not cost you any money should it lose, but you get to keep the winnings if you win. Sometimes they will be offered specifically to be used on a Darts match just because you are a customer (Ladbrokes like to do this) but it is more common that they will be given as part of a general reward package and you have the option to use them on a darts bet if you wish. Be careful to read the T&C's carefully, important things to look for are "Free bets valid for 7 days", "Qualifying bet must be min odds of 2", or similar.

Price boosts: Boosting the price of selected feature bets is a popular way to draw attention to a current darts tournament and get some attention from the betting public. Sometimes these "boosts" can be genuinely well above market rates and worth looking at but beware of boosts that just change the odds from bad to average.

Stake returned cash bonuses: This is quite rare these days but some bookmakers may top up your next deposit with an amount of cash added on top. You will not be able to withdraw this money until a certain amount of wagering has been completed, and if it is a darts betting promotion then the wagering may have to be on darts betting. The difference between this bonus and Free bets is that a Free bet which wins does not return the stake, but these winning bets do.

Most popular darts betting markets

For each individual match there will be a number of darts betting markets. You will have who is going to win obviously, but also there are a number of other common markets. The best darts betting sites will have as a minimum the following popular darts markets:

  • To win the match: Usually written as "match odds" this is the simple selection on which player will progress to the next round. It should be noted that in standard format darts matches a draw is not possible.

  • To win the set: As well as to win the overall match it is possible to increase the excitement still further by betting on who will win each set. A set is usually made up of a maximum of five frames, the first to three wins the set.

  • Correct Score Predictions: This is a bet on how many sets each player will have scored by the end of the match. If you have bet on the correct score at the end of the match then you win.

  • Player With Highest Checkout: The "Checkout" is the score from the series of darts thrown that results in winning the frame. If you are on 401 and need 100 more points to win, you throw a treble 60 and a double 19 to score 98 and win the game, your check out was 98. You can bet on who will win with the highest final throws.

  • Total Match 180s: As the name suggests you are betting on how many maximum throws will be made during the course of the match. The maximum amount a dart can score is 60, so three darts all on the treble 20 area will result in 180 points, the most possible.

  • Player With Most 180s: Again, pretty self explanatory, which player will score the most maximum throws in the match.

  • Nine-Darter (Yes/No): The pinnacle achievement in darts is winning a leg with just 9 darts, the lowest amount possible. This is the perfect set of throws and some players can go their whole careers

  • Handicap markets: Sometimes when there is a heavy favourite which can happen in the early rounds of some darts events, in an attempt to encourage more betting on the game extra betting markets (giving the underdog in the match a certain head start) are added to (or handicap)

Major darts tournaments

There are a number of darts tournaments played throughout the year making darts one of the most consistent sports when it comes to betting availability. It is not like football which shuts down in the Summer, darts players continue to play all year round. In Chronological order from January onwards the main tournaments are:

Darts Premier League (February - May)

Originally launched on 20th January 2005 exclusively on Sky Sports the event has gone from strength to strength. It is played weekly all through February right up into May and what began as a fortnightly fixture in small venues around the UK has grown from 7 to 8 players and now includes nights hosted all around Europe. The event sees eight players from the professional darts corporation circuit competing in a tournament format. The top four players in the PDC Order of Merit are paired with four wildcard selections to make up the eight-man field. Alongside the PDC World Darts Championship and the World Matchplay event it is considered one of the top three events darts betting fans love to watch.

UK Open Darts (March)

Known as the Cazoo UK Open this darts tournament began in 2003. It is a ranking event held every year at the glamourous Butlins Minehead Resort by the English PDC. It is colloquially known as the "FA Cup of Darts" due to the large number of darts players who enter and that seedings mean the top players get added as the knock out stages progress. One hundred and sixty players compete in the multi-board event over eight stages before the PDC’s Top 32 enter the tournament in the fourth round. The tournament has a prize fund of £450,000 with the winner taking home £100,000!

World Darts Matchplay (July)

The 2023 World Matchplay event is sponsored by Betfred and this year will be the 29th annual staging of the World Matchplay event (organised by the PDC). This year the tournament will take place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, from 15th to 23th of July. Notably, the tournament will also have a separate event exclusively for women on the day of the final of the main tournament. The Women's event will feature the top 8 players as decided by the 2023 PDC Women's Series.

World Grand Prix (October)

The BoyleSports World Grand Prix is a PDC darts tournament traditionally held in Dublin, (Ireland) every October but in 2021 it takes place in Leicester (England). The reigning champion is Jonny Clayton of Wales, who defeated fellow Welshman and defending champion Gerwyn Price, by a margin of 5–1.

Grand Slam of Darts (November)

The Grand Slam of Darts is organised by the Professional Darts Corporation and is commonly referred to as the Cazoo Grand Slam of Darts (due to their sponsorship of the event). The PDC has previously invited the best performing players from its rival, the British Darts Organisation until the BDO's collapse into liquidation in 2020.

World Darts Championships (December - Jan)

The World championship began in 1994 as the 'WDC World Darts Championship' when the World Darts Council broke away from the BDO. It is now known as the 'PDC World Darts Championship' and it begins in December and ends in January (Normally January 1st). It is held at the Alexandra Palace in London and has been held there since 2008. It is the most prestigious of the PDC's tournaments, with the winner receiving the Sid Waddell Trophy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best betting site for darts?

This is a hard one to answer because what is best for one person will not be the best for somebody else. The best betting sites will have some of the best odds, live streaming, live betting, in depth statistics readily available, and Free bets credited on qualifying bet settlement. Darts fans should not gamble just for the Free bets, qualifying bets can lose, so please play responsibly.

What payment methods can I use for darts betting?

If you are a darts fan then you can deposit into online bookmakers in exactly the same way using exactly the same methods as any other sports betting fan does. All of the same payment methods are accepted. All UK licenced bookmakers accept both Visa and Mastercard debit cards. Beyond that, every bookmaker will have their own list but PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, and Trustly online banking are all accepted by most. Sometimes if you are taking part in an offer for Free bets just check if payment method exclusions apply.

Which bookmakers offer live darts streaming?

Any bookmaker that offers sports betting services online is very likely to offer live streaming as part of their service, and darts is just like any other sport. The best bookmakers will feature matches from all the tournaments including the Women's games and qualifying matches but all should provide some coverage of the major tournaments.

Which bookmakers offer player stats for betting research on their websites?

Three of the best bookmakers for this are Bet365, Coral, and Betfred. Other sites may provide some information here and there but for in-depth statistics and the latest news surrounding the sport those three are the best.

Which bookmakers offer in play darts betting?

All of the best betting sites will have at least some live betting options. The quality of the product will vary from bookmaker to bookmaker with some including a huge amount of live streaming and also statistics whilst others just show a page of changing odds!

Can I Bet on 180s in darts?

Yes, you can place all sorts of specific darts bets relating to the total number of points scored in each throw. How many 180s will be thrown in the match (over/under) is one particularly popular bet.

Is there handicap betting in darts?

Yes, there is certainly handicap betting available from the best betting sites. A handicap when betting is useful if you want to place a bet on darts on the underdog, even if they lose the match if it was close and they only just lose you can still have a winning bet.

What is the biggest darts tournament in the UK?

If you are going to define "Biggest" as the one which has the most prize money for winning it then it is the World Darts Championship (Run by the PDC). The winner receives an amount of £500,000 from the total prize fund of £2.5m split between all the players.

Which is bigger, the BDO or PDC?

Neither is "bigger" than the other as such but overall the PDC is usually considered to be the better organisation if you consider the quality of the players and razmataz of the tournaments. The PDC has more TV coverage which in turn means more prize money available so because of more lucrative sponsorship deals the players are more well paid. Both organisations are allowed to hold their own version of the World Championship of Darts because they both recognise the WDF as the governing body of the sport.

Can I trust Legalbet.uk?

Yes, of course you can. We will never ask you for any sensitive information or pass on any information to anyone without your specific prior consent. The information we provide is not financial advice but is for entertainment purposes, to help you get the most from your sports betting.
