Chelsea vs Manchester United: prediction & betting odds 18 April 2026

Published: 25 March 2026 11:14

On Saturday evening at Stamford Bridge Chelsea will host Manchester United. The kick-off will be at 20:00 in London.

They will battle for three points that are vital in the race for Champions League places. Of course, this will not quite be the match of the round in the Premier League when the schedule also includes a head-to-head between Manchester City and Arsenal, but there are no other serious contenders for match of the day.

We will outline the latest news from both camps ahead of this key clash, explain how they are coping with absences and offer a prediction for the game. The safest option that removes all doubts is priced at 1.57.

The previous meeting between these teams took place in pouring rain, with both sides reduced in numbers and under different head coaches. Now the responsibility for the result lies with Liam Rosenior and Michael Carrick. The head coach of the Londoners has already confirmed that Enzo Fernandez will be available for selection in the starting lineup.

Confident Bet for the Match

The recent results of Chelsea have been affected by the absence of the Argentinian, but over the whole season the schedule congestion in previous months (60 matches played against 39 for Manchester United) has also had an impact, as has the conscious emphasis on talented but inconsistent youngsters: the average age of the team is 23.6, the lowest in the Premier League. So the problem is not in Liam Rosenior's methods, but in the overall inconsistency. It is no longer possible to blame the Club World Cup. The hosts are quite capable of causing problems for the giants, but at the key moment they lack ruthlessness — sometimes in finishing (-12.94 xGDiff, the second-worst figure), sometimes in withstanding pressure, with a negative balance in the last 15 minutes of matches (8:10). For example, in the first half against Pep Guardiola's side the hosts, playing on the counter (33% possession), created the only clear-cut chance between the two teams. Cucurella even scored, but it quickly became clear that the Spaniard had strayed offside. In the second half, and in perfect weather, the visitors from Manchester crushed the hosts. The third goal for the away side was one for the textbooks — they swarmed like two vultures around the unfortunate Caicedo, and one of them (Doku) smashed the ball into Sanchez's net, with the goalkeeper also at fault for his haste.

Manchester United are also performing well. They lost to Leeds United in a match they should not have lost — at Old Trafford. For 45 years the Whites had been unable to beat the Red Devils at their famous stadium, but two first-half strikes from Okafor created a rare story. It is harder for Michael Carrick's team to face exactly this type of opponent, who fully embrace the role of underdog. Against clear leaders such as Manchester City and Arsenal it was Manchester United who themselves willingly became the second-fiddle side. That suited them better. Back in January this demoralised both elite opponents. In any case, one defeat is not a catastrophe. Harry Maguire was missing as he was serving a suspension for a foul on Kroupi that led to a penalty and the draw with Bournemouth. His return was planned for the game against the Londoners, but on 1 April the FA confirmed that the red card for the penalty-area foul was justified, and his unsporting behaviour immediately afterwards added another match to his ban. Matthijs de Ligt is injured, and Lisandro Martinez picked up an even more foolish red card against Leeds United. There are effectively no other options in central defence: they will have to field 19-year-old Aidan Heaven.

This time the weather is expected to be clear, but will that protect the teams from mistakes? Pedro Neto (Estevao) and Joao Pedro will deliberately target the young Yoro and Heaven, while Chelsea have already accumulated 21 unforced errors leading to a shot. Every third one of those has resulted in a goal. A match between such teams simply cannot do without a decent number of goals. All the more so as four of the last six head-to-head meetings have finished over 2.5 goals.

Alternative Bet for the Match

We have already mentioned that these teams have issues with discipline. All the more so given that at Old Trafford in September they finished 10 against 10. Michael Oliver, appointed as the referee for this match, has taken charge of a total of 109 games featuring these teams (in all competitions), but has shown only 0.05 red cards per game to Chelsea and 0.10 to Manchester United. The last red card he produced in a match between them was in the 2016/17 FA Cup quarter-final, when Chelsea beat Manchester United 1:0. Ander Herrera was sent off before N'Golo Kante's goal. The referee himself is not bloodthirsty, but the frequency of dismissals for these teams still provides serious grounds to expect a repeat.
