Former Liverpool defender Matip announces retirement

Former Liverpool defender Joël Matip has announced his retirement from professional football, as confirmed by the Merseyside club's press office.

The club issued a statement saying, "Now Matip confirmed that his playing career has reached a conclusion. Everybody at Liverpool wishes Joel and his family the very best for the future. "

Joël Matip joined Liverpool from Schalke in July 2016. During his time with the Merseyside club, the defender made 201 appearances and achieved significant success, including winning the Premier League and the Champions League. He also secured the UEFA Super Cup, two English League Cups, and both the FA Cup and Community Shield. After his contract with Liverpool expired last summer, the 33-year-old Cameroonian had been without a club.
