Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the NHL match.
Surprisingly, the Calgary Flames are near the top of the Western Conference, sitting second in the Pacific Division, despite facing a tough schedule in the first week. The Chicago Blackhawks have also shown their prowess. Can the Flames extend their winning streak to four games?
Calgary Flames
The Calgary Flames have secured impressive wins, first against the Pacific Division winners, the Vancouver Canucks (6:5 OT), and then over the Edmonton Oilers (4:1). Both victories came on the road. Between these was a home triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers (6:3). The Flames don't have a reliable penalty kill (66.7%, 25th place): only the Oilers failed to score against them, which helped the Flames to overcome their neighbours.
Chicago Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks might appear to be an easier opponent in comparison, but that's based on past impressions. They have strengthened, albeit not drastically. Their power play has been outstanding in the first week of the season (42.9%). The duo of Connor Bedard and Teuvo Teräväinen is on fire—both have recorded five points in three games and are the only ones on the team with a positive efficiency rating. If the Flames' defence fails to contain this pair, they could cause significant trouble.
Calgary Flames vs Chicago Blackhawks Prediction
Both teams are clearly leaning towards offence at the moment. Their leading forwards are performing well, but there are defensive issues: games with a total over 6.5 have occurred twice in three matches for both teams this season. We don't expect that to change.
