The bookmakers make the more experienced Yulia Putintseva the favourite, but Elina Avanesyan has built up serious momentum in qualifying and is ready to challenge her on clay.
Elina Avanesyan
The 23-year-old Armenian player is having an impressive season (31 wins in 45 matches), and slow clay is her main strength: 25 wins and 10 defeats in 2026. At the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open, she has already come through three matches, dropping only one set across two qualifying rounds, and in the opening round of the main draw she routed former champion Arantxa Rus (6:2, 6:1).
Long rallies and the heavy bounce on the Hamburg courts allow her to make maximum use of her stamina, keep her unforced-error count low and punish opponents for any short ball.
Yulia Putintseva
The 31-year-old from Kazakhstan is having a modest season (24 wins and 16 defeats), although she also has a positive record on clay at 12-8. In the first round of the tournament, Yulia Putintseva showed composure to get past Mona Barthel (6:2, 7:6), but the win was far from dominant. She hit four double faults, faced four break points and her first serve was unimpressive (63% of first serves in and 66% of points won behind it).
Putintseva is dangerous thanks to her variety and the constant changes of pace with drop shots, but on slow courts she can at times lack composure. When rallies become long and the opponent refuses to give up the initiative, she can lose emotional control and commit unforced errors.
Elina Avanesyan vs Yulia Putintseva Prediction
In the head-to-head, Yulia Putintseva leads 2:0, but both of those wins – at the 2023 China Open and the 2025 Australian Open – came on hard courts. This will be their first meeting on clay, and the current numbers clearly favour Elina Avanesyan. She has found ideal competitive rhythm at the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open and has twice as many wins on clay this season (25 compared with 12). Given the one-sided victory over Arantxa Rus and her tenacious defence, it will be very difficult for Putintseva to hit through her consistently without a high number of unforced errors.
