Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity: Design and Theme
🖼️ Graphics
We start in a dark study lit by candles and the cold glow from tall windows. The reel area sits like a cabinet of curiosities with skulls, pocket watches and viscous elixirs, while a small side grid of all-seeing eyes hints at trouble. On launch, the game throws in a solemn Lovecraft quote, which sets expectations for whispers and old gods nicely.
Trigger the bonus feature, and the room peels into a violet rift with runes and smoke, the UI pulsing as the Portal wakes up. It looks dramatic without becoming visual noise, and the walking 2x2 horror feels properly otherworldly when it stomps across wins.
🎶 Sound
The soundtrack keeps the mystery simmering. An adventurous motif rides over ritual drums, as if we are mid-ceremony rather than watching from the doorway. Cascades quicken the percussion and add tense stingers, and the closer the Portal creeps to Damnation, the more insistent the loop becomes. Perhaps we are being picky, but against the backdrop of mostly small wins and a noticeably melting balance, the musical accompaniment does not seem entirely appropriate for what is happening on the playing field.
In the feature, everything tightens a notch, with hits cracking through the mix and the meter ticking like a metronome for impending chaos.

Special Symbols
- Wild (book with green eye): substitutes for any symbol and can trigger Portal effects when it helps create wins.
- Multiplier Wild (Rich Wilde portrait): carries x2, x3, x4 or x5 in the base game and up to x10 in the bonus. If several multiplier wilds land in one winning cluster, only the highest applies.
- Yog-Sothoth Wild (2x2 eldritch mass): a 2x2 wild that walks three steps across the grid between cascades. Its multiplier multiplies with the Multiplier Wild where both connect.
- All-Seeing Eye (side grid marker): not a paying symbol on the reels. Opens when you win on its corresponding cell and then drops 2–4 book-wilds after cascades finish.
Bonus Game
- Charge the Portal by collecting winning symbols. At 48 charges, you get one special free spin with three Portal effects guaranteed.
- Overcharge adds one extra effect per +4 winning symbols up to seven effects total.
- During the bonus, opening any All-Seeing Eye summons the Yog-Sothoth 2x2 wild. Opening 4, 5 or 6 special eyes boosts it with x2, x3 or x4.
- After each cascade, if no new win appears, a random unused Portal effect triggers. The round ends when all earned effects have been used.
RTP, Volatility and Maximum Win
The default RTP is 96.20%. Alternative profiles of 94.20%, 91.20%, 87.20% and 84.20% also exist and are selected by the casino. Volatility is medium (6/10 by Play’n GO’s scale). The win cap is x5,000 of the bet. If the cap is reached, the feature concludes, and further play for that round stops.
Our Verdict
Tome of Insanity is a neat twist on cluster slots. The base can feel measured, yet chipping away at the Portal meter has that “one more spin” pull, and the eye grid adds small puzzles to chase. The single-spin bonus is clever rather than chaotic, especially when a walking Yog-Sothoth lines up with a high Multiplier Wild and the maths finally wakes up. It is not a relentless bruiser, more a slow ritual that pays off in bursts. If you like structure and build-up with medium risk, this lands well, though players who crave constant fireworks may find the wait to 48 charges a touch long.
For a classic high-risk book slot, Book of Dead keeps things lean with expanding symbols in free spins and a noticeably spikier profile. Those after something savage and modern should look to Deadwood R.I.P from Nolimit City, which turns the volatility up with stacked wilds and escalating multipliers, better suited to players who accept long dry spells in pursuit of headline hits.
