Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Champions League match.
Liverpool's unbeaten streak was halted by a thrilling draw against Newcastle United (3:3), a result that should boost the Merseyside club's motivation ahead of their trip to face Girona. The team had a break due to the postponed fixture with Everton, whereas the Catalan team suffered a heavy defeat to Real Madrid (0:3) on Saturday — both sides enter their head-to-head clash in differing mental states.
Girona
Girona's debut in the Champions League has been historically poor for a Spanish side, losing four out of five group-stage matches. During their away leg against Sturm Graz (0:1), they managed just one shot on target with an xG of 1.79, while the Austrians hit the woodwork five times. Girona's troubles continued in December: they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey by modest Logrones (0:1 after penalties) and suffered a comprehensive defeat against Real Madrid, conceding seven shots on target with an xGA of 0.97 — their defence is poor.
Liverpool
Liverpool, on the other hand, are steadily marching towards claiming the 'Christmas champion' title in the Premier League, holding a seven-point advantage over the second place based on lost points. The Merseyside club are the only team in the UCL not to have dropped any points, boasting the best goal difference (+11). Mac Allister's suspension (due to yellow card accumulation) is unlikely to be a significant loss for Arne Slot, who would have rotated the squad against the underdog in any case.
Girona vs Liverpool Prediction
In Catalonia, Liverpool won't humiliate Girona, but they are set to secure a dominant victory. The English side should be able to achieve a win with a 2-3 goal margin.
