Borac Banja Luka will face Levski Sofia in the first qualifying round of the Champions League. The first game between them will take place on 7 July at the Gradski Stadium in Banja Luka. Kick-off is at 19:30 BST.
Both Balkan clubs failed to reach even the league phase of the Conference League last summer.
Borac Banja Luka recently had a successful European season, but against Levski Sofia, they are not considered favourites even on home soil. That is entirely understandable, given that their squad is valued at four times less than Levski Sofia's.
Two years ago, Borac Banja Luka played in the second qualifying round of the Champions League but failed to get past PAOK. However, that setback became a stepping stone that allowed them to reach the last 16 of the Conference League in the 2024/25 season. The team from Banja Luka are now led by Vinko Marinovic, who uses a 4-2-3-1 formation at all his teams. The main threat will come from 29-year-old Luka Juricic, who scored 27 goals in all competitions last season. Borac Banja Luka's problem is that there is a huge gap behind him. The next player scored only seven. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Mladen Jurkas became the star in goal. He has not played a single minute for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, but travelled to the World Cup as the third goalkeeper. The question is whether he will take part in the first round of the Champions League.
Levski Sofia took advantage of Ludogorets being busy in Europe until the end of winter and of their own strengthening, including financially, to become champions of Bulgaria for the first time since 2009. Since the arrival of new owner Atanas Bostandzhiev, Levski Sofia have looked much more secure. This summer, Julio Velazquez's team strengthened both attacking flanks with two Chaves players: Brazilian Reinaldo and Angolan David Cusso. Between them, they scored 11 goals in Portugal's second tier. Given that another Brazilian, Everton Bala, who scored 19 goals last season, may move to the Israeli league, this is an important reinforcement.
If Luka Juricic is shut down, Borac Banja Luka will have no real levers of pressure left, and if Mladen Jurkas also does not take part, the hosts' chances of success, even at home, will decrease even further. With this attack, Levski Sofia can quite calmly score at least once. With a goal, even a strategic draw will become very realistic.
