Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Serie A match.
Heading into the 18th round of Serie A fixtures, both Empoli and Genoa have managed to create a small buffer away from the relegation zone before the Christmas break. However, they are set to continue their battle for safety as the league progresses into its next phase. Genoa appear to be in better form coming into this head-to-head clash, as Empoli have suffered three defeats in their last four matches.
Empoli
Since the end of November, Empoli have conceded seven goals in matches against AC Milan (0:3), Torino (0:1), and Atalanta (2:3). In Bergamo, they nearly snatched points from the league leaders but ultimately succumbed after allowing 1.38 xGA and 16 attempts at their goal. It’s also crucial to note that Empoli have eight players sidelined through injury, with key defender Mattia De Sciglio still suspended for this upcoming match due to a red card.
Genoa
Genoa's defeat to Napoli (1:2) marked their first loss since October, bringing an impressive six-game unbeaten run to an end. Under their new management, they have improved their transitional play, although their xG of 16.14 suggests they’ve underperformed slightly with only 14 goals scored. Genoa have found a balance across their lines, managing to control possession even without stars Ruslan Malinovskyi and Junior Messias. Recently, against AC Milan, they achieved 43% possession.
Empoli vs Genoa Prediction
Empoli rank just above Monza in terms of xG (14.60 vs 14.46), which means Genoa's defensive frailties in their penalty area are somewhat less concerning. With the coaching change having injected new momentum into the Genoa side, our suggestion is to take a double chance. They currently look stronger.
