Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
At the Racecourse Ground, two neighbours in the table meet as Wrexham (19th) host Oxford United (20th). Both sides have endured a patchy start to the campaign and favour a cautious, defence-first approach. For the hosts, this is a chance to finally end their winless run, while the visitors aim to consolidate their position outside the relegation zone.
Wrexham
Wrexham are without a win in four straight matches and failed to score for the first time this season in a 0:1 defeat to Stoke City. Finishing has been their main issue — only three goals in the last four games despite averaging 1.05 xG per match. Home form has been particularly disappointing, with three draws and two losses — making them one of just five clubs yet to win on their own turf. Defensively, they’ve conceded 10 goals at home, the second-worst record in the Championship. Structurally, however, Wrexham remain organised, pressing high and maintaining compact midfield lines, but the lack of end product continues to cost them points.
Oxford United
Oxford United ended a three-game winless streak with a morale-boosting 1:0 victory over Derby County — their first home win of the season. Away from home, though, their form remains shaky, having lost three of their five road games. They tend to start well, scoring 9 of their 11 league goals before half-time, but fade significantly after the break. Tactically, Oxford United sit deep in a low defensive block, prioritising shape and compactness over attacking risk, which often leads to tight, low-scoring matches.
Wrexham vs Oxford United Prediction
Both sides play conservative football, and goals have been scarce in their head-to-heads — only two of the last nine meetings have gone over 2.5 goals, while three of the last four have finished under 2. Given Wrexham’s home struggles and Oxford United’s defensive setup, another low-scoring affair seems the most probable outcome.
