Sevilla have had a busy pre-season, with a focus on reshaping their attack. Akor Adams, Nemanja Gudelj, Ørjan Nyland, Rafa Mir, Adnan Januzaj and Juanlu Sánchez left the team in the summer, but the club have strengthened with Aruna Sangante, Juan Iglesias, Jon Guridi and striker Neal Maupay. Rayo Vallecano enter the season with personnel changes: key defenders Pep Chavarría and Nobel Mendy have left, while Raúl de Tomás has returned from loan and Marash Kumbulla has joined from Roma. Rayo's pre-season friendlies were difficult — just one win and three defeats, including a heavy 0:3 loss to Ipswich. Although the attack scored five goals in four friendlies, the defence made nine costly errors.

In their last 10 head-to-head meetings, Sevilla have recorded four wins, five draws and one defeat. At the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, the hosts traditionally dictate the terms through high pressing and possession.
