Casper Ruud and Luciano Darderi will meet in Rome on 15 May at 14:30 CET in the first semi-final of the ATP Masters 1000 Rome.
Both players reached the semi-finals after three-set wins, but the difference in effort required was considerable.
Casper Ruud
Since the end of April, Ruud has recorded seven wins and only one defeat on clay at Masters events – a quarter-final loss in Madrid to Alexander Blockx (4:6, 4:6). These results have allowed him to make up for a poorer spell earlier in the season, when his win-loss record was almost even (9:8). However, even reaching the Madrid quarter-finals did not prevent him from dropping ten places in the ATP rankings, as he won that tournament at the same time last year.
Key statistics:
• He wins 66% of points behind his own serve across all surfaces.
• His career total of aces is 2,379 (approaching 2,500).
• So far in Rome he has not served more than four aces in a single match.
• In 2026 the pair have won only one title between them, taken by Darderi, who triumphed in February at the ATP 250 event in Santiago, also on clay.
Even last year’s title in Madrid did not prevent him from losing in this year’s quarter-final there to Jannik Sinner (0:6, 1:6). In Rome he can only potentially face Sinner in the final. Ruud is showing a much better level than in previous months. A heavy shower that began after the first set of his match against Karen Khachanov (6:1) did not affect his game. The second set (1:6) does not reflect his true level – he reduced his intensity, aiming to move as quickly as possible into the deciding third set. When required he defends well and often wins points with his backhand.
Luciano Darderi
Luciano Darderi has significantly raised his level in recent months. Before Rome he had a run of 14 wins and six defeats, including a final in Buenos Aires and a title in Santiago. He has been extremely consistent on clay this year, whereas his results on hard courts have been much more modest – a 4–4 record.
Key statistics:
• For three years he has kept his first-serve points won percentage on clay above 70%.
• Apart from this tournament, over the last two seasons he had a negative record at Masters level – roughly three more defeats than wins per year.
• His forehand is his biggest weapon.
Against 32nd seed Rafael Jodar, he played a match that lasted almost an hour and a half longer than Ruud’s contest with Khachanov. That match also went to three sets, but the first two contained at least 12 games each. In this more physically demanding encounter, Darderi came out on top. When Jodar began to suffer from cramp, Darderi took advantage. He is at his best in long rallies – in the match with Jodar he was well behind in points lasting fewer than five shots (42:57).
It is unlikely that the match will be decided quickly. With the backing of the crowd, which will be on his side, he is likely to offer strong resistance right to the end, even as a slight underdog.
Casper Ruud vs Luciano Darderi Prediction
The Rome match will be their first meeting. Darderi has been on the ATP Tour five years less than Ruud and, largely due to experience, the advantage lies with Ruud.
We can expect a tight contest in which physical condition and the ability to withstand long rallies could be crucial factors. Ruud is the favourite, but Darderi has the quality to handle the pressure and to take any chance that comes his way. Our prediction at Legalbet is a bet on Darderi to stay competitive with the games handicap.
