Both clubs were scheduled to play FA Cup round-of-32 matches that weekend, but only Wrexham actually played. Bristol City’s tie against Port Vale was postponed until March because of the poor state of the pitch. As a result, there will be a difference in their remaining energy levels.
Bristol City
Bristol City did still travel to Stoke-on-Trent, but they conserved energy and picked up no injuries. Their most recent match was on 7 February in the previous EFL Championship round, and they won it. They scored in various ways in their 3:2 victory over Hull City: from a corner, from a wide positional attack and from a counter-attack. All of that is positive, but we should also remember the heavy 0:5 home defeat against Derby County a week earlier.
Wrexham
Thanks to their 1:0 win over Ipswich Town, Wrexham have recorded their best FA Cup run since the 1996/97 season, when they reached the quarter-finals; they are now into the fifth round. This confirms how strong their season in the EFL Championship has been. In the last three league rounds they were sixth in the standings. Rivals picked up points and pushed them out of the play-off places, but the side still have their round-32 fixture to play.
Bristol City vs Wrexham Prediction
Even though Wrexham will be away, that should not worry them: they have won all four of their recent away matches. Bristol City, by contrast, have lost two of their last three games at Ashton Gate Stadium. Taking this into account, and also remembering Wrexham’s 2:0 win in the reverse fixture, we will back them on the Double Chance. This is our choice even though Bristol City have unexpectedly had a rest period.
