Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the Championship match.
Both teams failed to score in their recent matches, but Portsmouth managed to earn a point against formidable Sheffield United, who are aiming to return to the Premier League. Stoke City may appear to be an easier opponent, but they will have home advantage. Will they capitalise on their opportunities?
Stoke City
The team have lost their last three matches against opponents from whom they could have easily taken points. Middlesbrough (0:2) stand out among these teams, but they have found their form and are now consistently picking up points. In the match against Middlesbrough, Stoke City only managed to create something meaningful from the middle of the second half, but they failed to convert their only big chance. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough scored two goals even from less obvious situations. Stoke City are clearly in a slump.
Portsmouth
It's hard to fault Portsmouth for their weak results and second-to-last place in the table. They faced a tough schedule in the first two months of the season, with five of their seven opponents being in the top six. Despite this, they managed to take points from Leeds United and Sheffield United. They held the latter to a goalless draw just this past weekend. This was Portsmouth’s second clean sheet result, having previously drawn with Luton Town. Portsmouth squandered their only significant chance in the first half, where they were notably good against Sheffield United (0.33-0.16 xG).
Stoke City vs Portsmouth Prediction
Stoke City’s situation is actually worse. They have not only lost their last three matches but also five of their last six, with their only win coming against Plymouth Argyle, which is not a significant achievement. Portsmouth, even when losing, have created serious chances against top teams. They should be able to find opportunities against Stoke City too, and are likely to secure at least a point.
