Design and Theme
🖼️ Graphics
San Quentin xWays is designed as the interior of a correctional facility: grey walls, barbed wire, and surveillance cameras maintain an atmosphere of constant control. In the base game, the colour palette is muted, with a background faded by concrete and steel. In the bonus round, the visuals come to life: red walls, graffiti, and silhouettes of inmates in the foreground create a sense of chaos and crowding. Visually, the slot keeps you on edge, as if you’ve found yourself trapped in a confined space under someone else’s control.
🎶 Sound
In San Quentin xWays, the sound works as an extension of the visuals: in the base game, you hear metallic clicks, scraping, and short clanging sounds — like bolts being slammed shut. In the bonus mode, heavy bass and aggressive sound effects are added, creating the rhythm of a street fight. The music doesn’t dominate but clearly sets the pace, reinforcing the feeling that behind the prison gates, there’s no such thing as a calm game.

Special Symbols
- Enhancer Cells — one cell above and one below each reel. When opened, they can reveal one of the five top symbols, a wild, Razor Split, or xWays.
- Razor Split — splits all regular symbols on that reel into double positions; if the symbol appears in both the top and bottom cells of the same reel, the symbols are split twice.
- xWays — reveals identical regular symbols stacked up to 4 high. If xWays is active in both cells on the same reel, the entire reel becomes covered with 8 single wilds.
- Scatter (marked “Bonus”) — can appear on any reel. If 1–2 symbols land, they turn into wilds and simultaneously unlock the Enhancer Cells. When three or more scatters land, the bonus game is triggered.
- Split Wild — can land on any reel in the base game. When it appears, it splits all regular symbols on that reel, increasing their number, but it does not split itself.
- Jumping Wilds — appear only during free spins. These wilds jump to random positions on each spin, and their multipliers are boosted by Razor Split and remain active until the end of the bonus round. The maximum multiplier on one wild can reach x512, and no more than three Jumping Wilds can be active simultaneously.
Bonus Game
During the bonus round, it becomes clear how to play San Quentin xWays for big wins:
- The feature is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters — starting the round with 1, 2, or 3 Jumping Wilds, respectively.
- Before the bonus begins, the Enhancer Cells open to determine the number of spins (+1, +2, or +3) and a multiplier for a random top symbol.
- In each spin, mystery symbols appear on the reels that contained scatters — they can either grant a multiplier to the chosen symbol or transform into a top character or a Jumping Wild.
- If a new scatter appears during the bonus, it unlocks additional cells, adds more spins, and transforms into a Jumping Wild.
- Jumping Wilds move around the reels; their multipliers are enhanced by Razor Split and remain active until the end of the feature.
RTP, Volatility, Max Win
RTP — 96.03%, volatility is high. The maximum win is capped at x150,000 of the stake.
Our Verdict
San Quentin xWays leaves the impression of a brutal slot: base game wins are rare and small, and wilds don’t appear often. Everything revolves around the bonus feature, which ultimately decides whether your balance stays alive. Lockdown Spins feel like a separate game on their own — the Jumping Wilds create chaos on the reels, multipliers build up and stay until the end, and in some rounds, things can truly spiral into madness.
This slot will suit those who are ready for long waits and enjoy the aggressive mechanics typical of Nolimit City. If you want something in a similar spirit, try Fire in the Hole 2 from the same provider, featuring a comparable set of mechanics, or the newer release Dead, Dead Or Deader, where everything revolves around free spins and multipliers.
