Simon Dalton presents his prediction for the 2026 World Cup qualifying match.
This game holds its own intrigue. Both teams are currently at the bottom of the CONMEBOL standings, trailing the nearest team, Venezuela, by at least five points. Who will secure these crucial three points?
Peru
Just over two years ago, Peru nearly made it to the World Cup, losing to Australia in the intercontinental play-offs only on penalties (5:4) after a goalless 120 minutes. Under their new head coach Jorge Fossati, the team has struggled at the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, earning only two points from six matches. Even a home victory (1:0) against Uruguay in the second-to-last round couldn't dramatically change their position.
Chile
Chile have been in poor form. In the last qualifying cycle, they finished 7th with 19 points, five shy of a play-off spot. They haven't won in seven matches, and if you count only official ones, it's been ten since their last victory, which was against Peru (2:0) at home back in October 2023. At Copa America 2024, Chile failed to advance from a group containing Canada, Peru, and Argentina: scoreless draws with the first two and a last-minute defeat to La Albiceleste (0:1).
Peru vs Chile Prediction
Even a struggling Peruvian side can handle this Chilean team. Both teams have been low-scoring throughout the year. Prior to their simultaneous 0:4 defeats in the last round, Peru had consistently played to a total under 2.5 in their six previous matches, while Chile had a total under 3.5.
