Australia vs Egypt: prediction & betting odds 3 July 2026

Published: 27 June 2026 08:09

Australia and Egypt will play their round-of-32 match at the World Cup on 3 July. The match will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA. Kick-off is at 19:00 BST on 3 July. This is one of six round-of-32 ties without a European representative and a tempting opponent for Argentina in the next round, where they already see themselves.

This is almost a classic three-way match, so alongside a not entirely obvious pick on the result, we will also look at other classic lines: handicaps, totals and goals. A good option is a bet at 2.07.

Odds Review

As this is a three-way match, the greatest value can be found by betting precisely on that, with odds starting at least from 2.50. At the same time, there is almost no point in betting on a minimal handicap, unless it is only the fifth selection in an accumulator. It is clear that there are unlikely to be more than two goals here, so Under 2.5 goals will not bring too much return, no more than 50% profit. It is better to add something to it.

Betting Tip

The very first round of the group stage showed that these two teams could become potential surprises at the World Cup. Both prevented European favourites from winning. Egypt are now quite rightly seen as the leading side in this tie: Mohamed Salah really does have an influence, and there are other interesting individuals in the Pharaohs' squad.

Australia are not exactly packed with stars, as most world-class Australian stars mainly play rugby union and rugby league. The football team has to call up foreign-born players with Australian roots. In the current squad, eight players were born outside the Green Continent, which is as many as 30% of the entire list. The best performer has been right-sided centre-back Alessandro Circati, who was born in Italy. Even in the defeat to the United States, he received the highest Socceroos rating of 7.4 from Sofascore. For him, that is also his lowest mark at the tournament. His positional partner, the almost two-metre-tall Harry Souttar, is also dangerous from set pieces near the opposition goal: the captain has won 11 of 18 aerial duels. The problem for Tony Popovic's team is that it struggles to play on the front foot. In that case, more creativity is needed to break down a deep opponent. The final round against Paraguay showed that clearly, when with five shots on target the overall danger of the chances amounted to 0.55 xG.

Egypt, meanwhile, showed how to break down an opponent playing with five defenders in the first five minutes of the match against Iran. It was at the end of that spell that Mahmoud Saber scored, with his shot squeezing through a forest of opposition legs and past the goalkeeper's hand. Mostafa Ziko played an important role in the move leading to the goal, acting as the passer. Of course, the Pharaohs will not be left without creativity and set-piece deliveries from Mohamed Salah. If Australia choose to play reactively with a low block, the captain's help will be important. Despite the bright impression from the game against Belgium, Hossam Hassan's team have enough problems, and even Iran exposed them. There was the penalty they conceded early in the match, which fortunately was missed, and a late escape. There was also the rather controversial decision to disallow Iran's second goal and Yasser Ibrahim's clearance already in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Incidentally, Egypt have serious squad problems after the match against stubborn Iran. Before being knocked out, the Iranians managed to injure them. Three players left the pitch in Seattle with injuries. The main concern is the condition of Mohamed Salah, who was substituted in the 57th minute. He has a hamstring strain, but has already started treatment. Centre-back Mohamed Abdelmonem is undergoing intensive treatment on his ankle, while left-back Ahmed Fatouh is almost guaranteed to miss out because of a hamstring tear. It looks as though his recovery could take months.

In this context, with Egypt facing a defensive reshuffle, Australia have a good chance of scoring and therefore progressing, as they kept clean sheets in two of their three matches. We are unlikely to see more than three goals in such an even and high-pressure game, so alongside the under, it is worth taking double chance on the nominal hosts. Yes, the squad is weaker, but Egypt's injuries and the example of chaotic defending late on against Iran could well make this result a reality.
