Why Switzerland Are Favourites
The bookmakers prefer Switzerland based on their excellent results in the group stage. After a slip-up against Qatar (1:1), Murat Yakin's team confidently dealt with solid Bosnia and Herzegovina (4:1) and Canada (2:1), who are in no way inferior to Algeria in terms of class.
Algeria conceded three goals twice at the tournament.
Switzerland are 19th in the FIFA ranking, while Algeria are only 28th.
Switzerland have lost only one match across 2025 and 2026 (10-6-1).
Manzambi's excellent form: 3+1 in two games.
Form and Line-up Switzerland
Switzerland's start to the group stage was frankly poor — a draw with group outsiders Qatar (1:1), although in that match the team generated 3.2 xG and were let down only by their finishing. The second round against Bosnia and Herzegovina was also difficult, but everything changed after young Manzambi came on. First, a brace in 19 minutes, then a goal and an assist against Canada. His partnership with Vargas (2+1) seems impossible to stop.
The only weak spot is the defence. Although the Swiss dominated each match, they consistently conceded one goal. The Akanji and Elvedi pairing raises plenty of questions. Yes, they work very well in possession in the opposition half, but they make too many mistakes near their own box.
Key Numbers Switzerland:
8th for possession (61.9%).
11th for shots on target (6) and 8th for xG (6.4).
They allow only 4.3 shots on target (20th place).
11th for xGA (2.5).
Probable Switzerland line-up (4-5-1): Gregor Kobel — Luca Jaquez, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez — Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, Djibril Sow, Johan Manzambi, Ruben Vargas — Breel Embolo.
Absentees: Silvan Widmer (doubtful).
Form and Line-up Algeria
Algeria have once again managed to get caught up in a World Cup scandal, although this time as participants in an alleged fixed match. Of course, there is no proof, but the exchange of goals in stoppage time against Austria (3:3) inevitably leads to such thoughts. However, we are far more interested in how the team got through the group stage and what they will show in the play-offs.
The first thing that stood out was their dreadful defending. Seven goals conceded in three games speaks for itself. There are also a number of problems in attack. Mohamed Amoura's injury has left Gouiri as the only real option up front, but in three matches he has taken only three shots at the opposition goal. The only bright spot is Mahrez, but he is already 35, and he will be powerless against covering defenders from stronger opponents.
Key Numbers Algeria:
24th for xG (3.9) and 21st for shots on target (4.3).
5th for possession (63.1%).
43rd for lateral passes (2).
21st for xGA (3.4).
Probable Algeria line-up (4-5-1): Luca Zidane — Rafik Belghali, Aissa Mandi, Rami Bensebaini, Rayan Ait-Nouri — Fares Chaibi, Nabil Bentaleb, Riyad Mahrez, Ibrahim Maza, Houssem Aouar — Amine Gouiri.
Absentees: Mohamed Amoura (injury).
Team Chances
Let us convert the odds into probabilities and remove the built-in margin (~4%). Average line: Switzerland 2.10, draw 3.25, Algeria 3.95.
| Outcome | Average Odds | Odds Without Margin | Real Probability |
Switzerland Win | 2.10 | 2.18 | 45.9% |
Draw | 3.25 | 3.37 | 29.7% |
Algeria Win | 3.95 | 4.10 | 24.4% |
After removing the margin, Switzerland's win is estimated at around 45.9%, the draw at 29.7%, and Algeria's success at 24.4%. The market clearly favours the hosts, which is not surprising. They have a much stronger squad, and the visitors' defence will certainly not cope with the opposition's pressure.
Alternative Bets
Over 2.5 goals — 2.05-2.15: High odds with minimal risk. Both teams forget about defending, and Over 2.5 goals has landed in five of their six matches at the tournament.
Both teams to score — Yes — 1.80-1.90: This is based specifically on weak defensive play. Switzerland did not even keep Qatar out, so it is hard to believe in their success against Algeria.
To score a goal — Johan Manzambi at 3.75: In the last two games he scored three goals despite having xG of only 0.77. The young forward is showing phenomenal finishing.
Switzerland (-1): Switzerland will certainly be able to open the scoring in this match, which will force Algeria to throw everything into attack. Huge free spaces will open up, which Vargas and company will easily use.
Total Prediction
The 2.5-goal total line leans towards the under — 1.70-1.80. The market expects the teams to abandon their ultra-attacking style in the play-offs and focus on defence, which does not sound especially reliable.
Line | Over | Under |
1.5 | 1.33 | 2.80 |
2.5 | 2.10 | 1.70 |
Over 1.5 goals at 1.33 is practically a 100% option for accumulators. At least two goals have been scored in every match involving these teams, and Switzerland have not kept a single clean sheet.
Handicap Prediction
Switzerland Draw No Bet is the most confident position. Even if they suddenly fail to finish off the opposition, which is extremely unlikely, the bookmaker will return the stake. A win by any score would mean the bet wins.
H1 (Switzerland) | Handicap | H2 (Algeria) |
1.40-1.50 | 0 | 2.70-2.80 |
3.10-3.30 | +/- 1 | 1.30-1.35 |
Switzerland (-1) at 3.10-3.30 looks risky, but not unfounded. The quality of their forwards will help them take the lead, while Algeria's leaky defence will not hold the score if they try to come back.
Both Teams to Score Prediction
In the both teams to score market, there is a slight edge for Yes: 1.85-1.90 (~54%) against No at 1.90-2.00 (~51.3%). That is not surprising: between them, the teams have played six matches at the tournament, and only one of them did not feature goals at both ends.
Both teams to score — No is an extremely poor option. Yes, Algeria struggled against Argentina's defence, but they had seven shots and even scored from an offside position. Switzerland, meanwhile, look much weaker in defence.
Double Chance Prediction
The 1X option (Switzerland to avoid defeat) is the safest option at 1.20-1.30. The 12 option (either team to win) at 1.33 is for those who are confident the game will not go to extra time. X2 (Algeria to avoid defeat) at 1.65-1.80 is a bet based on the Swiss being dreadful in defence and a sudden lack of goals from Vargas. That is hard to believe.

1X is an excellent option for accumulators, while given the opponents' motivation, 12 also looks decent, as defeat or a draw would mean elimination from the tournament for one of the teams.
Individual Total Prediction
Bookmakers believe in both teams' attacks, but do not expect more than one goal from them.
Under | Individual Total | Over |
3.65 | 0.5 | 1.23 |
2.60 | 1.0 | 1.45 |
1.66 | 1.5 | 2.12 |
Switzerland Individual Total
Bookmakers have almost no doubt that the Swiss will score, but they have little faith in their two goals, apparently remembering the match against Qatar. However, as practice has shown, this team can score two, three and even four goals.
Algeria Individual Total
Under | Individual Total | Over |
2.49 | 0.5 | 1.48 |
1.62 | 1.0 | 2.18 |
1.30 | 1.5 | 3.20 |
Algeria to score at 1.48 is an excellent option for an accumulator. The matches against Austria and Jordan showed that the team are excellent on the ball and know how to break down even a low block.
Correct Score Prediction
The most likely scenarios involve pressure from Switzerland, which will certainly bring them success. They will definitely open the scoring, and then there are three possible scenarios — they hold on, double the lead or concede.
Correct Score | Odds (~) |
1:0 | 6.00 |
1:1 | 5.40 |
2:0 | 8.5 |
The optimal option in terms of risk and logic looks like 2:0 in favour of Switzerland: the favourites score and force the opposition to open up and push forward. Then comes a lightning counter-attack that doubles the advantage.
