Why Mexico Are Favourites
The bookmakers prefer Mexico based on their excellent results in the group stage. Ecuador can only dream of three wins and zero goals conceded. Despite a bright qualifying campaign, they reached the playoffs only thanks to a miracle.
The match will be played in front of almost 90,000 Mexican fans.
Mexico are 14th in the FIFA rankings, while Ecuador are only 23rd.
The hosts have not lost once in 2026 (9-2).
Dominance in head-to-head meetings: Mexico have won 15 times, Ecuador only four.
Form and Line-up Mexico
In the group stage, Mexico proved that the absence of official matches had not affected the home team's preparation at all. Javier Aguirre assessed his team's strengths and weaknesses soberly and built the side around defence. As a result, they did not concede a single goal, including against a solid South Korea team (1:0). Moreover, the hosts allowed only 1.5 xGA, the second-best figure at the tournament.
However, things are nowhere near as smooth in attack for the team. Yes, they scored six times, but their total xG was only 3.7. Starting forward Raul Jimenez scored in the first round, but then disappeared. At the same time, it should not be forgotten that their opponents were far from elite national teams. None of them had defenders from Arsenal or PSG.
Mexico Key Numbers
Did not concede once in the group stage.
Are on a run of six wins with an aggregate score of 14:1.
Manage only 4.3 shots on target (20th place).
Created 3.7 xG (26th place).
Probable Mexico line-up
(4-3-3): Raul Rangel - Jorge Sanchez, Johan Vasquez, Edson Alvarez, Jesus Gallardo - Luis Romo, Erik Lira, Bryan Gutierrez - Roberto Alvarado, Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones.
Absentees
None.
Form and Line-up Ecuador
Although Ecuador frankly failed in the group stage, they certainly should not be written off. Of course, even in qualifying it was clear that this national team were weak in attack: they scored only 14 goals in 18 matches. At the World Cup, the situation has not changed: they failed to break down even Curacao and Cote d'Ivoire.
However, it should not be forgotten that Ecuador are excellent defensively, which is far more important in knockout matches. In qualifying, they conceded only five times, while at the World Cup they have allowed 2.70 xGA (16th place). It is important to understand that in the final round, top-class Germany generated only 0.65 xG and had three shots on target. And Germany have players who are an order of magnitude stronger than Mexico's.
Ecuador Key Numbers
Created 1.27 xG against Germany (2:1).
19th place for possession (55%).
3rd-best figure for lateral passes (6).
10th place for shots on target (6.3).
Probable Ecuador line-up
(4-4-2): Hernan Galindez - Piero Hincapie, Joel Ordonez, Willian Pacho, Alan Franco - Nilson Angulo, Moises Caicedo, Pedro Vite, John Yeboah - Enner Valencia, Gonzalo Plata.
Absentees
None.
Teams' Chances
Let us convert the odds into probabilities and remove the built-in margin (~5%). The average line is: Mexico 2.20, draw 2.90, Ecuador 3.95.
Outcome | Average Odds | Average Odds Without Margin | Probability Without Margin |
Mexico win | 2.20 | 2.32 | 43.2% |
Draw | 2.90 | 3.05 | 32.8% |
Ecuador win | 3.95 | 4.16 | 24.1% |
After the margin is removed, Mexico's victory is estimated at around 43.2%, the draw at 32.8% and Ecuador's success at 24.1%. The market sees dry football from both national teams as the main scenario, where one goal will play the key role, after which one of the teams will completely shut up shop.
Alternative Bets
Under 2.5 goals - 1.40-1.45: The best option for accumulators. Both teams are having serious problems with finishing and, most importantly, will barely even try to score. A 1:0 scoreline would suit either of them.
Both teams to score - No - 1.60-1.70: This is based specifically on strong defensive play. Even if one team manage to score, they will then sit deep in their own penalty area to keep the scoreline intact.
Mexico individual corners under 4.5: in three group-stage matches, Mexico earned only four corners. Odds above 1.50 are a real gift that should be taken without overthinking.
Double chance (12) - 1.35-1.45: Each team's defence is a real fortress. If one of them manage to score, the probability of conceding is extremely low.
Total Goals Prediction
The 1.5-goal total line leans towards the over at 1.60-1.65. The market sees one of the teams opening the scoring and then either catching the opponent on the counterattack or eventually conceding.
Line | Over | Under |
1.5 | 1.60 | 2.30 |
2.5 | 2.70 | 1.40 |
Under 2.5 goals at 1.40 is a much more reliable option for accumulators. Even if one of the teams equalise and 1:1 appears on the scoreboard, both national teams will try to calm the game down to minimise risk and wait for extra time.
Handicap Prediction
Ecuador (+1) is the most reliable position. A one-goal defeat is a push, while a draw is a winning bet. Even if the visitors cannot keep a clean sheet, it is hard to imagine a situation in which they concede twice, because Mexico will immediately give up the ball and park the bus.
H1 (Mexico) | Handicap | H2 (Ecuador) |
1.40-1.50 | 0 | 2.50-2.60 |
3.10-3.30 | +/- 1 | 1.25-1.35 |
Mexico Draw No Bet at 1.40-1.50 looks attractive. Yes, it is possible that they will not be able to keep a clean sheet, but conceding twice is unlikely. At the same time, the colossal level of support from the home stands should not be forgotten, as it certainly will not allow them to sit back from the opening minutes.
Both Teams to Score Prediction
In the both teams to score market, there is a clear advantage for the No option: 1.60-1.70 (~60%) against Yes at 2.20-2.30 (~44.4%). That is no surprise: between them, the teams have played six matches at the tournament and only one of them produced goals at both ends.
Both teams to score - No is the priority option, but far from the best one. Now defeat will mean elimination, so the team who concede will do everything possible to equalise.
Double Chance Prediction
The 1X option (Mexico not to lose) is the most cautious option at 1.20-1.30. The 12 option (either team to win) at 1.29 is for those who are confident the opponents will not share the points. X2 (Ecuador not to lose) at 1.65-1.70 is a bet based on cautious play from the hosts, in which they will not take major risks in attack.
Bookmaker | 1X | 12 | X2 |
Hollywoodbets UK | 1.27 | 1.41 | 1.66 |
Betfred | 1.25 | 1.40 | 1.67 |
Virgin Bet | 1.28 | 1.41 | 1.64 |
1X is an excellent option for accumulators, and given the opponents' motivation, 12 also looks decent, because defeat or a draw will mean elimination from the tournament for one of the teams.
Individual Total Prediction
Bookmakers believe in both teams' attacks, while not expecting more than one goal from either of them.
Mexico Individual Total
Under | Individual Total | Over |
3.16 | 0.5 | 1.35 |
1.98 | 1.0 | 1.81 |
1.41 | 1.5 | 2.88 |
Bookmakers have almost no doubt that Mexico will score, but two goals from them would be practically a miracle. Mexico under 1 goal, with a potential push, looks the best of the options.
Ecuador Individual Total
Under | Individual Total | Over |
2.23 | 0.5 | 1.65 |
1.40 | 1.0 | 2.93 |
1.19 | 1.5 | 4.60 |
An Ecuador goal at 1.65 is already not a bad choice. Although they had problems with finishing at the start of the tournament, the meeting with Germany showed that the South American team know how to score goals.
Correct Score Prediction
The most likely scenarios are a narrow win for one of the teams, or an exchange of goals followed by extra time.
Correct Score | Odds (~) |
1:0 | 5.20 |
1:1 | 5.40 |
0:1 | 7.20 |
In terms of risk and logic, 1:0 in favour of Mexico looks optimal: the favourite score and shut down defensively, which will prove impenetrable for Ecuador.
