Review of the bookmaker MarathonBet from Legalbet

Marathonbet is an online betting company that started in the UK in 1997, launching online in 2002.

They appear to use large amounts of their marketing budget not on promotions and bonuses but on some remarkably high profile sponsorships and tie-ups with top footballing brands.

They are the Official Betting Partner of 2018/19 Premier League champions Manchester City and have previously partnered with clubs across the UK and Europe including Manchester Utd, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Middlesbrough, West Ham, Derby County (all England), Hibernian (Scotland), Lazio (Italy) and Malaga (Spain).

The Marathonbet brand currently has a presence in the UK, Eastern Europe, Spain, Italy, and also interestingly Nigeria! They are however based in the UK, with headquarters in Brighton.

Odds - Good

Marathon Bet has a "Good" rating which does them a disservice because, in reality, the odds are better than good, they are fantastic. On normal football games, they are nearly always a market leader on at least one selection.

The odds available on other sports and lower leagues are not quite so good, but they are still very competitive and there is nowhere that Marathon Bet let themselves down.

We calculated the margin for MarathonBet by analyzing the odds they offer. We further ranked them in one of the following three categories:

From 1% to 5%: Good value

Over 5% to 7%: Average value

Over 7% to 10%: Poor value

Football

We got our results by taking into account the odds for final result outcomes measured in line with the over / under for different football leagues. Getting the average results using this method, we were able to obtain the margins for each league and the overall betting margin for the bookmaker.

MarathonBet has an overall average margin of 2.24% for football and falls in the low margins category. In the first section with Premier League and Championship, the margin is at 2.19%. The second section with Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A, the margin is at 0.98%. Finally, taking the English Football League One, Austrian Bundesliga and Polish Ekstraklasa into account, the margin is at 3.56%.

Range of Sports and Markets - Average

Range of Sports: MarathonBet has a surprisingly large range of sports to bet on, over 30 at time of writing, including “Beach Soccer” which we have not seen elsewhere before. As well as all the main sports you would expect it also includes other less well-covered sports such as “Bandy”, “Biathlon”, “Futsal” and “E-Sports”.

Range of Bets and Markets: As football betting is one of the MarathonBet main areas we were pleasantly surprised to see that you can bet on matches in over 60 countries. This is amongst the widest range we have seen and is also complemented by depth, allowing bets on not just the top divisions but also the lower leagues and Under 21s games too. The number of wagers available on each match can vary dramatically from game to game even in the same competition. At present in the English FA cup 2nd round the majority of games have just 9 betting options, the main win markets, half time results, and total goals. However, the FA Cup game that is shown live on UK TV, has a truly colossal 201 betting options.

Betting Limits: Initially bet limits are decent but if you only bet on the matches where the margin is 0% (so their best value lines) then they quickly limit you to winning about 50p at most per bet.

In-Play Betting - Average

The live betting area at MarathonBet claims to cover all sports but it appeared football and tennis matches were the most commonly available options.  For all the in-play events there was a large number of options to bet on which is good. On the other hand, the layout and usability are the best, it can be hard to navigate and it can be hard to locate the current statistics of the game you are following.

The betting limits can be quite heavily restricted if you have an account which is seen to be taking only value bets.
