Most Popular Markets for Betting on World Cup 2022
The FIFA World Cup is such a huge, world wide sporting event that the best World Cup betting sites will no doubt be offering an extensive range of different bet types for bettors to enjoy. In this section, we discuss some of the most popular World Cup bet types.
Outright Winner
This is probably the most popular bet type available to bettors wanting to take a punt on the World Cup. Exactly as it sounds, you are betting on which team will win the World Cup Final and finish the tournament as champions, lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy.
To win the group
The Group Stage is the first set of matches in the World Cup. There are eight groups, with four teams in each group. All four teams play each other, with 3 points awarded for a win or1 for a draw. The team with the most points wins the group. With this bet type, you are betting on a team to finish top of their group at the end of the Group Stage.
To qualify from the group
As above, in the Group Stage, teams are assigned to groups of four, who all play each other. Points are awarded for a win or draw. The top two teams of each group, qualify for the next stage of the competition; the final sixteen. Therefore, with this bet type, if your chosen team finishes first or second in their group at the end of the Group Stage, your bet will be successful.
To Reach the Final/Semi-Finals/Quarter-Finals
It is useful for teams that you do not think are good enough to win overall but you think are going to perform well, and better than expected, to bet on the markets that cover how far they will progress, without actually needing to win. This can still have some pretty high odds and will allow bets on the outsiders, but with a realistic chance of winning also. If your team to (or further than) the
Golden Boot
With this bet type, you are betting on the player who scores the most goals throughout the whole World Cup tournament, as the Golden Boot is awarded to that person. They do not need to be on the winning team, just have scored the most goals in total. If the number of goals scored is equal then it is decided on the number of assists. If the number of assists is the same then it is decided based on how many minutes each player was on the pitch, the one who played less is the winner.
Match Odds
With a match odds bet, you are betting on whether you think a particular team will win, or lose, or draw in a particular match. This is the result after 90 mins (+injury time). Extra time or a penalty shoot out does not count and will be settled as a draw.
Asian Handicap bets
An Asian handicap bet is a type of bet that balances the odds between two teams when one has a much higher chance of winning, than the other by giving the lesser team a fictional head start. For example, if your chosen team is highly likely to win, they may have a handicap of -1.5, this means that they will need to win by at least two goals, for the bet to be successful.
Total Goals (Over/Under 2.5)
This type of bet ignores the outcome of the game in terms of winners and losers. Instead, the total number of goals scored by both teams is taken into account. If you bet on Over 2.5 and the final score is 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 or any other result where three or more goals are scored, your bet will be successful.
Correct Score
Unlike Total Goals bets, with a Correct Score bet, you are betting on the exact outcome of the match. For example, if you bet on England to beat Wales 2-1, the game will need to end with that exact score in order to be successful.
First Goalscorer
In this type of bet, you are betting on a particular player to score the first goal in a particular match. Own goals do not usually count with this bet, and in this instance, it would be the second goal scored.
Betting on World Cup 2022 – Strategies & Tips
The World Cup is an exciting tournament and while some teams are stronger than others, the winner is never a done deal, so there is plenty of twists and turns to expect over the coming weeks. In this section, we discuss our top World Cup betting tips and strategies, to make the 2022 World Cup an even more exciting prospect.
Consider A Wide Range of Bet Types
The World Cup tournament comprises of 64 matches in total over the whole event, so there is plenty to bet on. In order to increase your chances of success, bet responsibly and consider spreading your betting budget out across a number of smaller, more interesting bets, rather than one big one. This will make for a more exciting tournament, as well as decreasing the chance of you losing your entire bankroll in one go.
Search for the Best Odds
Once you have decided on the bet you want to place, shop around the best World Cup betting sites to find the best World Cup betting odds. Some of the best bookmakers will offer enhanced odds or bet boosts on specific bets, giving you more bang for your buck. Alternatively some may have a "Refund IF" offer, and if that applies to the bet you want to place this is a great way to boost the bets EV.
Focus on Important Stats
When deciding on a World Cup wager, do your research and focus on the most important stats for that particular match. It is worth looking at how two teams may have performed against each other at previous meetings, but if they have not played each other since 2014, that result is unlikely to have any bearing on this tournament's matches. Research the teams to see if any key players are injured, making them less likely to succeed, and look at each team's current form, to give you an idea of their likely future performance. You can also look back at the World Cup history to see if there is any trends to watch out for, England losing on penalties springs to mind!
Claim Bonus Offers
The World Cup is such a popular tournament that there are bound to be Free bets and other promotions on World Cup bets on offer at World Cup betting sites. Shop around and take advantage of these offers, to get more bets for your money, and a potentially greater return on those bets.
Hedge Your Futures Bets
If you want to make sure that you do not lose out on a futures bet (e.g. betting on which team will win the tournament), then you can hedge your bet by making a series of smaller bets to win money when your selection loses. This only really works once your team is into the knock out stages and even then is probably best to use it from the semi finals onwards.
How it works is... say you have a £10 bet on England to win at odds of 10 (9/1). So if England wins you will make £90 profit but if they do not you will lose £10. Let's imagine that they have made it to the semi final stage, you could now bet on their opponents to qualify for the final, say at odds of 2 (evens). If you bet £10 on it that means should England get knocked out, yes your outright winner bet lost £ but your new bet on the other team to qualify has won £10 so overall you did not lose. You can do similar in the final to lock in a profit.
This is similar to using a "cash out" function but will almost certainly have better odds doing it this way, and it certainly gives you more control of the figures.
World Cup 2022 Betting Bonuses & Promotions
The FIFA World Cup is such a popular, worldwide competition, there are bound to be thousands of punters looking for World Cup bets and hundreds of World Cup betting sites vying for their business. In order to attract bettors, most bookies offer bonuses or promotions. In this section, we share some of the most common World Cup promotions on offer during this FIFA World Cup.
Sign-Up Bonuses
Sign Up Bonuses are for new customers creating an account with an online sportsbook for the first time. Usually, bettors receive a Free bet once they have deposited a specific amount of money and made a qualifying bet (and it has been settled) that meets certain Terms and Conditions, such as minimum odds. There are then certain conditions that must be met when placing a wager using the Free bet, so take time to read the Terms and Conditions of the promotion carefully.
Reload Deposit Bonuses
A Reload Bonus is similar to a sign-up bonus, but for existing customers. As it sounds, bettors receive a bonus when they 'reload' their account by depositing more funds. This bonus generally comes in the form of a Free bet, which will have specific Terms and Conditions attached to it, so take care to follow them.
Free Bet "If" Offers
This type of promotion is usually provided to bettors if their qualifying bet loses. For example, bookies might offer a 'Bet on England to win the World Cup and get a Free bet if they fail to reach the final' promotion. There will likely be a minimum stake required and conditions for using the Free bet, so be sure to read the small print. There can be any number of "if" scenarios though, including things such as if the cross bar is hit, or if there is a goal after the 90th minute.
Enhanced Odds Boosts
Almost all of the best World Cup betting sites will offer enhanced odds or 'Bet Boosts' on selected sportsbook markets during this tournament. It is worth shopping around between different online bookmakers to find the best odds on your chosen wager. These bets are often great value but will have a limited bet stake amount.
Best Betting Features
The best World Cup betting sites will have a range of different betting features for punters to enjoy. Here, we outline some of them.
Live Betting
Live betting allows punters to bet on World Cup matches in-play. Odds will change as the game progresses, making for a more exciting match. The best World Cup betting sides will provide a variety of different in-play betting markets for each match, so you can bet on the action as it happens.
Cash Out
The cash out facility allows punters to settle their bet early, before the conclusion of the match. Bettors may wish to use this feature if they get cold feet about their bet being successful or if they decide to quit while their team are ahead. The best World Cup betting sites will offer either a full or partial cash out facility. You will get better value doing exactly the same thing laying the bet at a betting exchange but this does require more capital and is (slightly) more complicated than just clicking a button at the bookies.
Live Streaming
Live streaming allows customers to follow the match live, alongside in-play markets. Some online bookmakers will offer live streaming in the form of frequently changing graphics, which track the current state of play. Unfortunately, it is unlikely any bookmakers will be offering live streaming on the World Cup in Qatar, they did not on the last World Cup anyway. But do not worry, every game is available on either the BBC or ITV free to air channels.
Bet Builder/Request-a-Bet
Bet builders allow bettors to create their own bespoke bets. This might be in the form of an accumulator bet. Request-a-bet allows punters to do just that; they can request a specific betting market that may not currently be available, and the bookmaker will generate odds to allow the bet to be placed. It is basically just like an accumulator, but on just one match.

Netherlands | UEFA | 8th |
The Netherlands looks the strongest of the bunch and are the only team with any World Cup form, finishing 3rd in 2018 and 2nd in 2010, they will be hoping to go one better this year. Senegal are the current African Champions and won't be a pushover, anything less than qualification to the knockout stages will definitely be a disappointment. Ecuador has reached their 4th World Cup but have only got out of the group stages once before, maybe this will be the year they can do it again. It is very hard to judge the true form of the host nation since they do not have to play any qualifiers but if Qatar makes it out of the group it will be considered one of the great World Cup achievements. The host nations do tend to do better than expected, demonstrated well by Russia only just missing out on the semi finals in 2018.

After reaching the semi finals last time England are looking to finally match the achievements of 1966 again this year. They have a chance and are amongst the front runners at the bookmakers, it will be a surprise if they do not win this group. The USA will have high hopes of getting the second spot, they are a bogey team for England in the World Cup after England have failed to beat them in two previous attempts. Iran vs USA is one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the group stages due to the political intrigue, whichever team loses this one will really struggle to qualify. Wales vs England is another key game, for the home nations anyway, Wales would like nothing more than to go through at England's expense. Although he is aging now they still have Gareth Bale in the squad, and England fans will know how dangerous that is when they remember his 2016 Euros Free kick!

Argentina ended their 28 year wait for a trophy by winning the Copa America in 2021 and Lionel Messi was pivotal. He is still in the squad for this year's World Cup and he will be looking to finish his career in style, this certainly being his last attempt at the ultimate prize. They are a dead cert to qualify from the group and Mexico should be close behind them, these two teams being a different class really. Not to be completely written off though Poland still have to be beaten, they won't just roll over and Robert Lewandowski is always a thorn in the side of the opposition. Saudi Arabia though are probably the weakest out of all 32 World Cup teams and if they manage to pick up a point, that will be some achievement on their part.

France are clearly the favourites to top this group and for them to not qualify would be a massive shock. Denmark are probably aiming for the second spot but it is not a given because Australia have been known to punch above their weight before in the big competitions. One thing that is almost certain though is that Tunesia, who are very good at qualifying for World Cup's final stage wont be finishing in the top two and going any further this time.

It is this year's group of death with no really weak teams and more than one good one. Spain and Germany clearly headline the group and we expect a 1-2 in one order or another, but to do it they will have to beat Japan who have a lot of players with European experience in their squad and also Costa Rica who are the weakest of the four but on their day can put up a fight against anyone.

The Belgian team is aging now, especially at the back where Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld will have a combined age of 69 when they line up next to each other in Qatar. Despite that they will have far too much quality to be troubled by this group, Croatia being their only potential hurdle. Croatia defied expectations in Russia in 2018 when they reached the final and they will be looking to go on a similar run this time, but if they were to go one step better that would be a huge upset. Morocco have been performing well recently and have a decent attack so could be one to watch. Canada's only previous World Cup was in 1986, and this squad with Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich and Jonathan David from Lille has a few players who can hold their own against the best in the World. It will be some accomplishment if they can qualify from the group though.

As if Brazil needed it, they have been handed a plum group to progress from, with no notable team there to challenge them for the top spot, indeed if Brazil does not qualify top of the group they will be very dissapointed, and not to qualify at all is unthinkable. On paper Switzerland is the next best team but neither Serbia, nor Cameroon who have a decent World Cup record, will be happy to go home early. The second spot is up for grabs for any of those three.

Portugal perhaps are a bit lucky to be here having needed to qualify through the playoffs but they despatched Turkey and North Macedonia with ease in the end. They are now top seeds but it will be very tight for second place. Uruguay appears to have turned a corner with new coach Diego Alonso, whilst S Korea qualified easily by winning seven and drawing two of their ten qualifying games. Ghana will do well to qualify to the knock out stages though, they did not perform well at their last major tournament, the Africa cup of Nations, and in Qatar they will be up against stiffer opposition than that.
